Indications

The iovera° system is FDA cleared and is used to block conduction of nervous tissue by applying freezing cold. It works by producing lesions in peripheral nervous tissue through the application of cold producing pain relieving effects. It is indicated for the relief of pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis of the knee for up to 90 days.  Ioveraº may be used preoperatively before knee replacement to block post surgical pain without the need for medications.  Ioveraº may also be used for subacute or chronic pain postoperatively.

A targeted zone of cold is created under the skin which prevents the nerve from sending pain signals. The effect is transient until nerve regeneration occurs.

Effects are felt within minutes following the procedure with nerves treated in the appropriate region. Results may vary.

In general ioveraº treatment is covered as a  peripheral nerve block by insurances but coverages may vary.  

Most patients are able to drive back home after receiving iovera® treatment and can resume basic activities on the same day. However, you should follow your doctor’s recommendations on safe levels to avoid stress on your joints

The iovera® treatment is very safe and approved by the FDA to block pain.  Minimal side effects such as swelling, tenderness or bruising at the treatment site comparable to any needle-based treatment may occur. Also local pain and altered feeling at the injection site may occur.
