What is

Ioveraº Treatment?

Dr. Keith P Johnson is committed to offering the latest and most advanced pain management treatments, and therefore we proudly offer the iovera° treatment to help provide pain relief without the use of medication. Other that the use of local anesthetic for comfort no medication is injected. Performed under ultrasound guidance, Iovera° treatment is a focused, targeted cold therapy. It uses the body’s natural response to cold to block the signaling portion of a peripheral nerve, which temporarily reduces pain until regeneration occurs. Other than a local anesthetic, systemic medications are typically not required. Therefore there are no systemic side effects that are typically associated with medication, such as NSAIDs or narcotics. Mild localized side effects, however, from the iovera° treatment have been observed such as transient swelling and bruising.

The iovera° system is FDA cleared and is used to block conduction of nervous tissue by applying freezing cold. It works by producing lesions in peripheral nervous tissue through the application of cold producing pain relieving effects. It is indicated for the relief of pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis of the knee for up to 90 days. Ioveraº may be used preoperatively before knee replacement to block post surgical pain without the need for medications. Ioveraº may also be used for subacute or chronic pain postoperatively.

How does it work?

The iovera^® treatment is very safe and approved by the FDA to block pain. Minimal side effects such as swelling, tenderness or bruising at the treatment site comparable to any needle-based treatment may occur. Also local pain and altered feeling at the injection site may occur.
