Preoperative Information

 

Consent forms detailing informed consent for surgery are required before surgery.  Commonly performed the day of surgery or alternatively in the office following a discussion about surgery.

Medical clearance is required in essentially all cases.  Paperwork will be provided in the office and clearance then obtained by your primary care physician.  If you do not have one, I referral will be provided.  Additional clearance may be necessary based on medical condition by appropriate specialist such as cardiologist, pulmonologist etc.

Medications – . Discontinue aspirin (and products that contain aspirin) minimum one week before your surgery. If you have been placed on aspirin by your primary care physician please alert/discuss with them in advance.  

Similarly discontinue NSAID’s (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as over the counter advil, aleve, motrin or prescription NSAID’s such as ibuprofen, naprosyn, and diclofenac within a week of surgery.

You may continue to take medications for hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorder, high cholesterol, asthma, heart conditions per normal routine up till the night before surgery.  If a particular medication such as for blood pressure is taken in the morning take WITH ONLY A SIP of water. If taken with coffee, milk, juice etc. will result in surgical delay or cancellation.  Consult with your primary care physician regarding important medications in the perioperative period.  In general, all medication other than anticoagulants may be resumed the same day following surgery.

Herbal and dietary supplements should be discontinued one week before surgery.  In particular supplements which could potentially increase bleeding risk such as vitamin E and echanasia shoulde be discontinued.

Alcohol and recreational drugs should be discontinued 24 hours or more before surgery. 

Tobacco products have known detrimental effects on wound healing and recommended to discontinue prior to surgery and throughout the healing process!

Jewelry, watches, necklaces, bracelets, rings and hair accessories should be left at home on the day of your surgery. Body piercings also are preferably removed especially if metal. Elastic or nonmetallic hair ties may be used.  Any metal on body is best removed.

Food/diet –  Do not eat or drink anything after midnight, the night before surgery.  On the morning of surgery, nothing should be consumed, not even water. You may take necessary medications with a small sip of water only. No exceptions exist, failure to comply will likely result in surgical cancellation and rescheduling for safety.

The time of your surgery may undergo small changes leading up to the date of surgery.  The office, hospital/surgical center will call you with final details regarding location, arrival time, and any additional instructions.

Transportation is commonly offered/provided for surgery performed at surgical centers.  The surgical center will contact in the days leading up to surgery for arrangements.   Commonly ONE family member may accompany.  Picking up multiple family members to accompany for surgery is not commonly offered.  State laws require that an outpatient surgical patient be accompanied home by an adult. Please plan accordingly. You cannot drive yourself home after surgery.
